Grapefruit & Lavender Lip Balm

I made these last night.

Grapefruit & Lavender Lip Balm

.5 oz Beeswax

.75 oz Coconut Oil

.25 oz Mango Butter

10 drops Jojoba Oil

1 drop Vitamin E

10 drops Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil

10 Drops Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil

Melt beeswax, mango butter and coconut oil in a double boiler. Remove from heat and add remaining ingredients, mix. Pour into lip balm containers quickly before cooling.

Whipped Vanilla Bean Pudding

I’ve had a box of vanilla pudding in my cupboard for what seems like ages, it never looks appealing however my b/f wont go near home made pudding because he doesn’t like the texture, was that how this ended up in my cupboard? Is this a hint? Well lets see what I have to fix this…

Whipped Vanilla Bean Pudding

1 box Instant Vanilla Pudding

1 1/2 cups 2% milk

1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

1 vanilla bean

1-3 drops brandy or bourbon (optional)

In a small sauce pan gently heat 2% milk to a simmer, then remove from heat. Add Vanilla bean seeds and wisk, let it sit for 10 minutes before transferring to the freezer to chill.

In a separate bowl whip the heavy cream to a whipped cream consistency. Transfer to refrigerator to chill.

Add chilled 2% vanilla bean milk, Instant pudding, whipped heavy cream and brandy/bourbon to blender and mix until smooth and fluffy.

Transfer to serving dish, chill for another 10 minutes then enjoy.

Coconut Milk and Aloe Vera Hair Wash

I’ve been avoiding shampoo alternative recipes because everyone seems to have a story about their long and arduous journey to find what works for them. It seems to be the common theme among blogs I have visited. Maybe I’ll have better luck I am telling myself…

After some reading I have decided I do not want to even try baking soda in my hair due to the possible damage it causes so there is one off of my list. I just got a bottle of Aloe Vera so I started with this recipe.

I added a little bit of jojoba oil and vitamin e. (too much in hindsight)

I mixed this up per the recipe, poured into ice cube tray to freeze, I refrigerated half the remainder and massaged the other half into my hair and took a relaxing bath where I  enjoyed my last bath bomb. It may be my skin overproducing oil or it might be that I made the mistake of rinsing my hair with cool water, I’m not loving it today because my hair is oily, but despite that my hair is clean and feels nice. I’ll give it a fair chance before I give up on it.

Indoor Garden

My kitchen garden is growing beyond my means to consume it, salads, salad dressings, chip dips, herbed chickens, herbed potatoes, infused oils and all of the other things I forgot I made were not enough, The Aerogarden grows fast! It’s time to start drying. I’m going to try the paper bag method. I now regret not bringing the food dehydrator with me when I moved.

(For the paper bag method you cut and tie small bundles of herbs, make sure any damaged leaves are removed. Tightly tie them hang upside down by the stem in  a paper bags for two weeks.)

My next grow is going to be Oregano, Savory, Mint, Chives, Parsley, Cilantro, and Genovese Basil.

Citrus Air Freshener and Carpet Deodorizer

I buy citrus regularly and I was looking up what I can do with the peels and I really like this one as it makes my apartment smell delicious as well as warms things up. I use it quite frequently.

Citrus peels (I generally use the peel of one orange or lemon but I’ve even used kumquats so I needed about 10 of them.)

10-12 cloves

1/2 stick of cinnamon

a 2 quart pot of gently boiling water

Add all ingredients, I usually break the citrus peel down to half dollar sized pieces. Boil until water is low, add water, boil until water is low. Discard.

And for something more modern there is also carpet deodorizer.

1 cup of baking soda

Essential oil of your choice. (I made Grapefruit Bergamot to compliment the air freshener. I added about 10 drops of each essential oil. )

Mix in bowl, add to shaker container of some sort with large holes. (I used a large prescription bottle with holes cut in the top.)

Additional citrus projects I haven’t gotten around to…

Drying citrus peels for sachets.

Citrus Sugar Scrub

Lemon Pepper

Citrus Multi Purpose Cleaning Spray

Lemon Extract

Hair Mask For Frizzy Hair

My boyfriend is trying to convince me to learn to cut hair so I could maintain his hair. He has thick hair, in fact two to three hairs come out of each of his follicles compared to my single wispy hairs. He also has long hair and I have zero confidence in cutting a straight line, but until he decides to get it trimmed professionally I will have to do something about frizz so I think I am going to convince him to let me apply a hair mask this weekend. I am thinking I will try the following recipe.

1 Tbs Almond Oil

1 Tbs Avocado Oil

1 Tbs Manuka Honey

1 Tbs Banana

1 Tbs Amla Powder

1 Egg

A few drops of essential oil(optional)

Firstly, mix the amla powder with a small amount of water to make a paste, set it aside for about 10-15 minutes then add all of the other ingredients and mix thoroughly until you have a smooth consistency.

Apply to damp hair and wrap hair up with saran wrap to make it less messy and then wrap your hair with a dryer warmed towel. Leave in for 30-40 minutes then shampoo and condition regularly then apply vinegar based hair rinse.
