Freshening the air, gardening and ordering new things.

Cinnamon Scented Automotive Air Freshener

I used  3 cotton balls and let about 1 ml of cinnamon essential oil absorb into them

You could also use a nice sachet or a piece of decorated felt to hang from the mirror but I didn’t want it to be seen so I used a large tea bag and tossed it under my seat.

Then I came inside and boiled about 6 cups of water with an orange peel, a stick of cinnamon and 8-10 cloves until my home smelled nice.

I planted a new aerogarden so I will have fresh herbs soon. From my last grow I just used the last of my dried sage and parsley in my turkey day stuffing. I got a whole jar of dried dill which I use all the time. The Lavender is still drying, then I am going to reinfuse my lavender oil to make it stronger. As for my outdoor plants the native strawberry is still green and my moroccan mint is clinging on, everything else has died back, fall is certainly done. The first snow fell last night but melted right away. I hope it’s not too late to post that fall picture I took three weeks ago.

I am restocking citric acid and I may make some bath bombs later on since I ordered Rose Clay but more importantly I needed it for dish washer soap, I’m almost out.

New ingredients I haven’t tried yet are nettle extract and tamanu oil, I got sample sizes of them. I am really excited about making a nettle hair wash and a tamanu lotion.

Adventures in Nopoo (8 months)

I have put a lot of food in my hair.. I guess that sounds odd but its true. A lot of skin and scalp issues I was having was caused by shampoo, so I stopped using it and started using things people used from before shampoo existed which isn’t as terrible as it sounds. Plus what others use as the modern shampoo alternatives. But as for food in my hair…

Banana, honey, dark rye flour, yogurt, sour cream, egg, carrot juice, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil, almond oil, coconut milk, pumpkin puree, black tea, chamomile tea, avocado, oatmeal, paprika, other stuff I’ve totally forgotten about.

All in the name of science.

I have pinpointed some things that work well for me, but one thing I have learned is that hair care is incredibly different person to person.

Dark Rye Flour hair wash for greasy, oily hair

1 tablespoon dark rye flour
~1/4 c. cool Water

Add water slowly and mix until it is the consistency of shampoo. Apply and massage scalp and work through hair with fingers, rinse thoroughly to get all of the grit from the rye flour out of your hair. It is a bit stubborn to get it out of your hair but I got the hang of it after a wash or two. This works well enough I generally do not use it more than once a week.

Dry Itchy Scalp Hair Care

In a small bowl mix equal parts

1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon silicone free conditioner natural conditioner
1 tablespoon aloe vera juice
1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin

If you have an aloe vera plant instead of aloe vera juice you can trim away the skin and yellow flesh and blend the clear jelly until smooth.

Mix well and apply to roots and scalp, work towards the ends of your hair. The mixture is pretty thin, once you have saturated your hair, cover it with a towel for about 10 minutes before washing it out.  Vegetable Glycerin will behave differently depending on the weather so I recommend omitting it when it is extremely hot/humid or dry/cold.

Vanilla Clove Lotion

Vanilla Clove Lotion

Distilled water, Vanilla Infused Sunflower Oil, Emulsifying Wax, Shea Butter, Clove Infused Sunflower Oil, Aloe Vera Juice, Vegetable Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Meadowfoam Oil, Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Oat Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Benzoic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid.

I only had enough infused oil for one batch, which fit into three containers perfectly with none extra for me, boo.

Some of the others I have available.

I placed an order for supplies to experiment with scrubs, walnut shell in particular.

I need to make some more soap soon and I sold through my Peppermint Cocoa Butter lip balms so I guess I’ll be making more lip balm soon… too bad I am out of vanilla oil… I never got to Vanilla Cocoa Butter or Vanilla Rum scents.

Also I need to strain my Lavender infused oil and start it into another lavender infusion to make it stronger. And my Dill is done drying, I need to process and put it in a jar. In my herb garden my Cilantro is blooming, I was hoping for the Lavender or the Chamomile to bloom but Cilantro is better than nothing I guess.
